Abstract

Evolution or Revolution? The Expectations of 4G services within UK Higher Education

As one of the biggest users of smartphones in the world (Davis, 2013) it is unsurprising that there was much publicity surrounding the launch of EE’s 4G (LTE) services to the United Kingdom (UK) in August 2012. Interest has been particularly heightened due to the manner in which it is claimed that the UK will, within a relatively short period of time, have the world’s fastest 4G network, which will also extend 2G and 3G coverage and reach 98% of the country within years. (Garside, 2013)

This presentation utilises the opportunity a six month Janet funded trial of 4G mobile services in Summer 2013 provided to consider whether the introduction of 4G services to UK Higher Education (HE) would represent a revolution in the manner in which mobile learning and mobile working could occur or whether this will instead be simply an evolution of existing services.

Both existing literature and primary research with trial participants are considered in key areas such as the ability to study in an any time, any place manner, improved access to education, particularly for those in remote and rural areas, the general effectiveness of 4G services, personal and organisational effectiveness and a transformation of teaching and learning.

Overall this presentation will demonstrate some of the key opportunities and advantages can be envisaged as a result of the adoption of 4G technologies and the extent to which this is expected to result in an evolution or a revolution in UK HE education View Slides Listen to Audio Visit Website Close
